Leeds United 1995-96

1995-96 was a season that began with so much promise for Leeds United, but ultimately fizzled out in disappointment. A run to the final of the League Cup ended in humiliation at the hands of Aston Villa. For Howard Wilkinson, the man who had brought Leeds back to the top flight 1990, and then to the very top of English football in 1992, this would be his final full season in charge at Elland Road.

Manager - Howard Wilkinson:

In 1988, Howard Wilkinson left top flight Sheffield Wednesday, in order to take over the reins at a Leeds United side floundering at the bottom of the second tier. By the end of the following season, Leeds were promoted as champions, and two years later they were crowned champions of England. To this day, Wilkinson remains the last Englishman to lead a team to the English top flight title. For the past two seasons Leeds have enjoyed back to back fifth place finishes. For the 1995-96 season, Wilkinson's aim was to get Leeds back in the title mix.

Squad:

Best 11:

Backup 11:

Key Players:

Gary McAllister (Captain):

A leader and classy passer of the ball, McAllister is the heartbeat of the Leeds team. When he ticks, Leeds tick.

A quality centre-back who is yet to establish himself in the Leeds team, but he has all the potential in the world.

A product of the Leeds youth system, Speed is one of the highest rated British midfielders in the game.

Wallace is a lightning quick and skillful forward. His only problem is inconsistency.

A fine centre-back with his best years ahead of him.

The human definition of explosive. A quick, powerful striker capable of scoring from almost anywhere with either foot. The ultimate crowd pleaser.

A player with undoubted ability, but a very questionable attitude.

A hardworking striker that doesn't lack in ability, but does lack in goals. He was brought in to be a 20 goal a season striker, but so far he has struggled to break double figures.

A top class left-back, the lightning quick Dorigo is as good going forward as he is in defence.

Kelly is 20 years old and has already been an ever present for the past two seasons, as well as becoming a fixture in the Irish national side. Being converted by Wilkinson from striker to right-back was the best thing to ever happen to Kelly.

Lukic has won the title as the first choice 'keeper for both Leeds and his former club Arsenal. He was once a top class 'keeper, but over the past couple of seasons errors have began to creep into his game, and it looks like his best days are behind him.

Leeds United 1972-73

From the mid-1960s until the mid-1970s, manager Don Revie took a Leeds United team that yo-yo'd between the first and second divisions of English football, and turned them into a world footballing powerhouse. It was a team that picked up plenty of trophies, although perhaps not as many as it should have, as they became the nearly men of English football, finishing as runners up in the league and FA Cup on numerous occasions. 1972-73 was one of those nearly years for Leeds - they finished third in Division One, and were denied a successful defence of their FA Cup crown by way of an upset at the hands of Second Division Sunderland, in the 1973 FA Cup Final.     Staff: Manager - Don Revie : A controversial figure, a man of superstition, Revie left nothing to chance, preparing detailed dossiers on his team's opponents. He was a man that was ahead of his time, and he was like a father figure to most of this Leeds squad. Squad: Best 11:     Backup 11:   Key Players: Billy Bremner
